Not happy with how your blades are functioning? Is your lawn not that manicured as you wanted it to be? Are you looking for a better finish for your lawn? All this will no longer be your reason to worry for we have come up with a solution that you have been looking for.
First things first. Why is it important to have sharp blades? The first answer is pretty much obvious and is known to almost everyone– to enable sharp cuts thereby giving a better finish and also reducing the mowing time. However, there is more to it. A dull blade causes ragged tears on the grass which is an invitation for fungal growth and a lot of other grass diseases. You wouldn’t want your lawn to look deserted. Would you?
Hence, it becomes important to keep a watch on the sharpness of the mower blades and sharpen them as and when required. Should that interest you, keep reading to learn how blades can be sharpened.
- It is always a good idea to start by removing the spark plug. Who would want the mower to start accidentally and make matters worse? Though the probability stands very low, why take a risk?
- Now, carefully remove the blades by loosening the bolts. Wearing gloves is advised. Also, keep your mower at a height so that you can have better access to the underside without actually having to tilt it.
- Sharpening can be done using many ways.
The first alternative is one of the fastest methods available – a bench grinder. Grind the blade edges against the grinding wheel and your job is done in a few minutes. You’ll see sparks while grinding, hence, one should wear eyeglasses compulsorily. This method is noisy but effective beyond words.
The second way is to make use of a flat-file. For this, the blade has to be secured in a vice and run at 90 degrees by applying pressure. This will smoothen the imperfections and once you are done with one side, reposition the blade and continue the same process. This is a time-consuming process but surely works.
Thirdly, one can make use of a sharpening drill. This is similar to a bench grinder but smaller as well as affordable.
